Impact of Television on People’s Lives [2]

Part 2 of 3
The following is about the negative impact television has on people’s lives.

TV causes us to make sacrifices such as sleep and other things. The question here is, what things in your life are more important than TV? And what is the reason you watch it? If the majority of Americans watch about 4 hours of TV each day, that would calculate to be 13 years watching TV in a lifetime of 80 years. Think of how much more you could do rather than watching TV in 13 years!

Think of how much more you could impact the world, if you spent all those 13 years of doing something profitable rather than just sitting at home watching TV. You could work in a homeless shelter for an hour a day, or a children’s orphanage- by doing that you are making a difference and wasting less years in your life.

If boredom is the only reason why you watch TV, I’d recommend considering what other things you can do. Like help clean the house, bake, cook, take your pet for a walk, go for a bike ride, shovel someone’s driveway, etc.

What is your view of the world and yourself? Is it the one the “good people” on TV tell you? Do you believe that to be happy you have to “find yourself” and be as independent as possible? Do you think a good job will make you happy? Do you think that if you buy this new truck, you’ll be happy? Television makes us believe lies about ourselves and the world. People are constantly living from one high to the next- never being satisfied, so they give themselves more and more of something so insignificant.

TV commercials tell us that if we eat this, we can lose weight. If you buy this, you’ll feel better about yourself. If you believe in yourself- you won’t get very far in life. No one can completely rely on themselves to make the right decisions, because we’re human- we totally imperfect. You cannot trust someone untrustworthy as yourself with your entire life in your own hands. So what are you living for, if you yourself, is not any good? Human’s duty here on earth is to live the way God intended us to. But by human nature, we’ll always choose the easy road- and that’s exactly what TV is promoting- they’re making excuses for everything.

TV is bad for kids. “It isn’t stimulating or educational. Many of the people who support the TV-Turnoff are teachers. They’ve seen first hand how it kills creativity and disrupts concentration. TV causes delayed acquisition of speech in very young children and is being studied for possible links to attention deficit disorder - a condition which has spread widely since the introduction of television into British homes. TV has been linked to heart disease and depression. And far from relaxing you, TV actually raises stress levels. It makes you lethargic, unhappy and unable to concentrate for hours after watching.”

The main 8 points of this article:

• TV robs you of your time.
• TV takes the place of recreational activites, family time, etc.
• TV fills your mind with unpromising lies.
• TV makes things look more attractive than they really are.
• TV can become a potential addiction.
• TV causes us to make sacrifices such as sleep, etc.
• TV makes us believe lies about ourselves and the world.
• TV is bad for kids.
